Bennett has a great history in wheelchair basketball. That was emphasized in 2016 when we held a 25th consecutive tournament in the Greenspring Avenue gym. It was wonderful to see so many program alumni back for the festivities, many with their spouses and own children with them. There has been a big influx of young, new players and there’s lots of energy in the gym these days. If you’re interested in adaptive sports remember that wheelchair basketball isn’t just for wheelchair users. Many of the athletes are ambulatory and use the wheelchair just for playing basketball. Our kids can attest to the fact that it is a fast paced, challenging and fun game enjoyed by all. Our parents can attest to the fact that their children get stronger and more independent thanks to the effort and focus they put into the sport.
Fall 2018 Update: The Bennett Blazers Wheelchair Basketball teams are in the gym gearing up for a great season. Our team goal is the National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in the spring.
Our athletes were particularly inspired by recent Paralympic gold medal performances of both the women’s and men’s national teams. This summer, five Blazers attended summer basketball camp at the University of Illinois where they have benefited from the great coaching of former Team USA women’s head coach and NWBA Hall of Fame Stephanie Wheeler.
